Design Director (PS3, X360, DS/Wii)
at Disney Interactive Studios in Glendale, California
The Design Director is responsible for game quality and design direction related to and including content, style, gameplay, scripts, and user interface. Elements of the position require a particularly specialized knowledge base typically from an expert videogame design development perspective. The ideal candidate would be a creative thinker who can draw upon their extensive gaming background to develop new and innovative player experiences primarily produced from a proven ability to create high concept designs.
Responsibilities
• Provide constant monitoring, recommendations, and feedback on the creative deliverables for each project milestone as delivered.
• Act as an independent set of eyes and ears to monitor progress objectively.
• Act as a point of contact for all creative issues on allocated projects.
• Review the implementation of game design with all team levels to meet quality standards.
• Ensure the creative vision is maintained throughout development.
• Act as an emergency design resource for troubled projects.
• Develop processes that encourage the production of quality games.
• Design and implement mechanisms for evaluating and tracking titles.
• Design and implement mechanisms to manage the pre-production process.
• Propose design pillars and gameplay mechanics in order to improve innovation in our products.
• Discover new methods to make the most of original Disney intellectual properties.
• Ensures that the approved plans for each product or product line fully consider content, characters, continuity, technology, market positioning and profit outcomes to contribute to large-scale growth of Disney Interactive Studios.
• Collaborates with other DIS/TWDC divisions on the creation of concepts and in production game designs.
Requirements
• Strong understanding of how to create designs compatible with team art and code capabilities.
• Previous experience at interfacing with developers, understanding of team structures and roles, and common engineering challenges in producing high quality videogame product.
• An established history of successfully driving quality design processes.
• Must have interfaced with external development studios at a production level.
• Must have an understanding of the pre-production process and how to maximize the exploration of design options and establish a design direction.
• Proficient knowledge of implementing/scripting game design elements
• AA/BA/BS preferred, or demonstrates through portfolio an industry standard level of design.
• 7 + years industry experience, including increasingly significant design experience on multiple AAA shipped products.
• Recent generation development tools experience (PS3, X360, DS/Wii). PC also a plus.
• Ability to produce articulate design documentation detailing innovative mechanics, interface design and content delivery.
• Ability to work well within a team environment working closely with producers, artists, marketing and management team.
• Must be able to travel, approximately 15% and hold a valid passport.
